Performance on Fire

You have your number.
Now the real question.

You just calculated how many summers you have left. Maybe it was 30. Maybe 20. Maybe fewer. Whatever it was, it was smaller than you expected.

So here is the question that actually matters now: how many of those summers is your business going to eat? Because right now, if you are honest, it is eating most of them.

The clock is already running. Let us figure out what your business is costing you.

The Framework

The Six Dimensions

Here is what most owners get wrong. They think being trapped in their business is a time-management problem. It is not. It is a structural problem, and it shows up in six specific places.

Every owner is strong in two or three of these. The gaps in the others are exactly where your summers disappear.

01

Systems

If it stops when you do, you own a job.

Documented processes and operational infrastructure that run without you in the middle of every decision. Most owners think they have systems. They have lists.

02

Delegation

You are not too busy to delegate. You are too afraid to.

The mindset gap between what you have built and what you are willing to let go of. You can have systems on paper and still refuse to use them.

03

Time

Recovery is not freedom if you fill it with more work.

Once systems and delegation work, you recover hours. This dimension is about what you actually do with them. Most owners fill them right back up.

04

Identity

Who are you when the business no longer needs you?

The most overlooked dimension and the most dangerous. Address it now or be ambushed by it later.

05

Legacy

The scoreboard is not your revenue.

What you are actually building, and for whom. Legacy is not retirement planning. It is the deliberate design of what you leave behind.

06

Energy

None of this works if you are running on empty.

Physical, mental, emotional capacity. Energy is not a lifestyle choice. It is a performance requirement. Protect it and you protect everything else.

Where the Six Dimensions Came From

I did not invent this framework in a classroom. I earned it the hard way, over three decades of building businesses that kept running me instead of the other way around. A restaurant supply route out of a minivan. A financial practice. A spa. Eventually a wealth platform managing close to a billion dollars.

From the outside it looked like success. From the inside, I was the machine. Everything ran because I was running it. I could not step away for a week without something breaking.

Then I sat at my desk one night at 3am and did the math. 84 minus my age. The number stared back at me, and for the first time I saw what every gap in my business was actually costing me. Not money. Summers.

So I reverse-engineered my own way out. Every place my business had trapped me, I turned into a dimension. Six of them. I fixed them one by one until the business could finally run without me in the middle of it.

Performance on Fire is that framework. The one I wish someone had handed me in year five.

"I had built something real. But I was still the machine. The day I asked myself what would happen if I stopped showing up, that was the day I started building the right way."
